Beyond the Grid

Nancy Genn

Palazzo Collicola hosts a major anthological exhibition of California artist Nancy Genn, displaying in its rooms a selection of works that embrace and trace an artistic itinerary spanning more than half a century.

The exhibition opens with abstract canvases from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly appreciated by the great art critic Michel Tapié – the first to cite the artist as one of the most significant exponents of postwar informal art in the United States (Morphologie Autre, 1960) -, and then moves on to a selection of Handmade Papers, artist’s papers made by hand. This is followed by works from the so-called “Roman period” (1989-2014), evidence of a genuine passion for travel and an irrepressible curiosity. Of a more intimate and meditative character are the paintings on paper and canvas made in the last two decades, between 2000 and 2023, in which the theme of water is constantly present as a source of renewal and purification. The exhibition concludes with three bronze sculpture specimens and some artist’s studies.
