Quayola’s concert “Transient – Impermanent Paintings” in Rome

Transient – Impermanent Paintings is an audiovisual concert for two performers and generative algorithms, which perform, together, a live improvisation for two motorized pianos and video projections. Hyper-realistic digital brushstrokes are articulated on a maxi projection, like on a canvas.
Transient traces a new direction in Quayola’s practice: the experimentation in fact now extends to sound, through the use of unconventional generative systems. A new software was developed specifically for this project, allowing continuous interconnection of images and sounds. The algorithms that drive the strokes are the same that also materialize in the sound of pianos. A symbol of the musical tradition, pianos combine technological and human characteristics: reproducing the movements of the hand, they create a connection with human reality, performing at the same time non-human virtuosity.

Transient – Impermanent Paintings è un concerto audiovisivo per due performer e algoritmi generativi che eseguono, insieme, un’improvvisazione dal vivo per due pianoforti motorizzati e proiezioni video. Pennellate digitali iperrealistiche si articolano su una maxi proiezione, come su una tela.
Transient traccia una nuova direzione nella pratica di Quayola: la sperimentazione infatti si estende adesso anche al suono, attraverso l’utilizzo di sistemi generativi non convenzionali. Un nuovo software è stato sviluppato ad hoc per questo progetto, consentendo l’interconnessione continua di immagini e suoni. Gli algoritmi che guidano le pennellate sono gli stessi che si materializzano anche nel suono dei pianoforti. Emblema della tradizione musicale, i pianoforti combinano caratteristiche tecnologiche e umane: riproducendo i movimenti della mano, creano una connessione con la realtà umana, eseguendo allo stesso tempo virtuosismi non umani.
